The Early Fall 2026 Capsule Wardrobe: September Edit

Welcome to the Blog
September is always a weird month to dress for. In some places, it’s sweater season, but not here in Florida 🥵. So instead of building a fall capsule wardrobe that assumes it’s suddenly 60 degrees outside, I wanted this one to feel realistic for early fall. Pieces that still work on warm days, but start introducing fall color, texture and layers. Thoughtful planning up front usually saves you a lot of time and headaches in the end!
Also! I’m trying something a little different with my capsule posts. Rather than sharing it once and moving on, I’m going to revisit this capsule every month and update it as the weather changes each month. Some pieces will stay and some will get swapped out. I’m hoping this new structure shows how a good core wardrobe can evolve with just a few pieces at a time.
Tops & Sweaters:
White Tank – September can still be HOT, and a simple white tank gives me a base that works by itself now and underneath the trench, denim jacket or button down when it cools off.
As fall progresses: This will likely be a piece I swap out. Once we get into consistently cooler weather, I’d replace it with a fitted long sleeve tee.
Dolman Sweater – This is my bridge between summer and sweater weather. It has the look of a sweater without being a heavy, chunky knit.
As fall progresses: I’ll eventually trade this for a warmer long sleeve sweater like this affordable cashmere sweater I love.
White Oxford Shirt – This is one of the pieces I expect to stick around for the entire capsule series. Wear it alone. Roll the sleeves. Tuck it into jeans. Wear it open over the tank. Layer it under a sweater. Add the trench over it. A year-round capsule wardrobe favorite! It can change with the weather without actually changing the item.
As fall progresses: Staying!
Chambray Shirt – I wanted a little more blue in the capsule beyond denim, and a chambray shirt gives me that while still functioning as a neutral. Right now I can wear it buttoned up or open as a lightweight layer. Later, it can go underneath sweaters and jackets.
As fall progresses: I’ll probably keep this through October and potentially replace it with a warmer layering piece once we get closer to winter.
Elbow Sleeve Denim Jacket– This is another very intentional September piece. You get that third-piece effect of a denim jacket without committing to full sleeves when it’s still warm outside. It also gives the capsule a little personality compared with a traditional denim jacket.
As fall progresses: Once temperatures drop, I’ll replace it with a classic long sleeve denim jacket or another medium-weight jacket like a chore jacket.
Cropped Trench Coat– The cropped length works really well with the wide-leg and barrel silhouettes, and the neutral tan works with everything from white denim to black pants to blue jeans.
As fall progresses: I’ll keep the trench as long as the weather allows. Once we need actual warmth, this slot can transition to a heavier jacket or coat.
Sleeveless Turtleneck Sweater – The chocolate brown instantly brings the fall color palette into all of those lighter early-season pieces. I especially love the idea of it with white denim because it feels fall-ish without going dark from head to toe.
As fall progresses: Definitely staying!
Striped Sweater – This organic cotton sweater is a favorite! It breaks up all the solids without limiting outfit combinations and works with every bottom in the capsule.
As fall progresses: Another keeper. This can easily carry into late fall and winter.
Bottoms:
I went with five very different silhouettes and colors here because changing your bottoms can completely change the feel of an outfit even when you’re repeating the same top.
Wrinkle-Free Trouser – I have been LOVING trousers as an elevated alternative to leggings. Although they’re dressy, they’re still so comfortable for everyday wear when you want to look put together. The silhouette works with everything from sneakers to slingbacks.
As fall progresses: Staying!
White Kickout Cropped Jeans – we don’t subscribe to the “no white after Labor Day” rule here. Most retailers start pulling white denim from their websites during LDW. If you’re reading this and this pair is still in stock, you’re in luck! I love this style because it pairs with all different shoe styles.
As fall progresses: Staying.
Raw Hem Wide-Leg Jeans – If I could only own one pair of jeans, these would be it. But I’m buying them in multiple washes. In fact, I already own them in three washes 🙈. Comes in tall inseam options!
As fall progresses: Absolutely staying.
Barrel Pants– These pants went viral for a reason. I’m obsessed with them! They have a slight curve shape and also another great alternative to leggings. I have them in navy and a brown (which would also be a great option for fall).
As fall progresses: Staying.
Wrinkle-Free Pull-On Pants – These are another viral for a reason item. They’re one of my favorites for travel. I can pull them out of my suitcase and they’re ready to wear. Not a wrinkle in sight!
As fall progresses: Staying.
Shoes:
Slingback Heels – These immediately dress up an outfit and a great option for when anytime sneakers feel too casual. The chocolate brown also ties back to the sweater, bags and accessories.
As fall progresses: These will eventually get replaced by an ankle boot or taller boot once bare heels stop feeling seasonally appropriate.
Taupe Mules– These are such a good early fall shoe because you get the suede texture without having your foot completely enclosed.
As fall progresses: I’ll be swapping this out eventually for loafers, boots or another closed-toe shoe.
Loafer Slip-On Sneaker– The hybrid loafer/sneaker Pinteresting Plans readers immediately loved and sold out when I first shared them! I like that it has the ease of a sneaker but the loafer shape feels more elevated. This is the kind of shoe I’d wear for errands, travel or a full day on my feet.
As fall progresses: Staying, always.
Retro Sneaker – Every capsule needs a sneaker, and this minimalist retro style works with the entire capsule.
As fall progresses: Staying.
Accessories:
Instead of adding a bunch of trendy clothing, you can really complete an outfit with a statement piece to shift otherwise seasonless basics into fall.
As fall progresses: Most of these will stay. I may introduce a darker or more structured bag later, but the chocolate, camel and taupe palette should transition beautifully through the rest of fall.
