Living in Florida year-round has taught me how to dress for heat and humidity without feeling like a sweaty mess. If you’re looking for ways to stay cool and comfortable in the summer, here are four tips that make a real difference. These small changes can help you feel better throughout the day and keep your outfits looking polished even in the summer.

1. Skip the Synthetics

SHOP THE LOOK:

Wearing synthetic fabrics in hot weather is like wrapping yourself in plastic. Synthetic fabrics trap heat and moisture, which makes you feel sticky and uncomfortable within minutes of stepping outside.

Instead, choose breathable natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or gauze blends. These types of fabric allow airflow and help wick moisture on hot days.

2. Lighten Up Your Color Palette

Dark colors like black, navy, and especially charcoal gray tend to absorb more heat and show sweat easily.

Wearing lighter colors helps reflect sunlight instead of absorbing it, which makes a noticeable difference in how hot you feel. Shades like ivory, cream, tans, etc. also tend to look fresher and more relaxed in summer. Bonus: sweat stains are much less obvious on light neutrals compared to dark fabrics.

3. Loosen the Fit

Tight clothes might seem cute in the mirror, but in the heat, they trap sweat and limit airflow. Tight denim shorts especially can feel suffocating.

Instead, look for pieces with a looser fit that still flatter your shape. Flowy dresses, relaxed-fit linen shorts, and wide-leg pants can be just as stylish while keeping you much more comfortable. The extra room lets your body breathe and helps prevent overheating.

4. Invest in Quality Undergarments

On really hot days, I sometimes change my undergarments a few times. That’s why I keep a good supply of breathable, machine washable basics on hand.

Look for underwear and bras made from lightweight cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics. I personally love this organic cotton bralette because they’re soft, supportive enough for everyday wear, and hold up well to frequent washing. Having extras on hand means you can stay fresh all day without stressing about laundry.

Dressing for hot weather doesn’t mean you have to give up comfort or style. With a few simple changes like wearing breathable fabrics, choosing lighter colors, and going for looser fits, you can stay cool and feel put together even on the hottest days. Having the right basics, especially quality undergarments, also makes a big difference. These are the tips I rely on to get through Florida summers, and I hope they help you feel your best too!
