Today I’m partnering with ModCloth to share a nautical high waisted bikini perfect for Summer. If you recall in my last swimsuit post I talked about body image and gaining the confidence to put myself on the internet in a swimsuit. The patriotic one piece swimsuit I wore for that post was the first one piece I had worn in decades. Since I was a teenager I have been wearing bikinis. But fast forward two decades (I’m now 35) my body has changed quite a bit. I purposely did not edit these images to share some of my own vulnerabilities. No better way to get comfortable in your own skin that to post half naked pictures of it on the internet, right?
In my last post I talked about how I didn’t choose any of the front angle bathing suit shots because I was self conscious about the pouches between my thighs. I made sure to include those shots here because I need to get over myself. There are much greater worries in this world than the width of a thigh gap. In several posts I have mentioned that I use a cellulite massager. It works friends! It’s not a cure but a year ago these same pictures would have included much more prominent dimpling on the back of my legs and bum. It does leave a lot of bruising when you first start using it so it’s nothing something you want to use right before you get in a swimsuit. I actually use this cellulite massager in the shower with shower gel (it’s a little more gentle, a good place to start) and then I added this cellulite roller for days I don’t shower.
To shoot the pictures of this high waisted bikini (wearing a small in top and bottom for reference) we headed to a picnic area at a local pond. Side note – it looks more like a lake to me, but what do I know? I hauled my family out of the house before 8 am because I wanted to make sure we were the only ones on the beach when we were taking pictures. It’s uncomfortable enough taking pictures in a bathing suit so I didn’t want to attract any curious eyes.
Why didn’t I think to give my kids a beach breakfast sooner? They had such a blast and thought the whole event revolved around them instead of my blog pictures. One of the perks of blogging is the adventures it has taken my family on. Next month my husband and I get to try out a newly renovated hotel in Newport, Rhode Island as part of a blog collaboration and this nautical high waisted bikini will be perfect to wear at a seaside hotel.
You’ll see below, I threw on a casual striped dress (wearing XS for reference) and espadrille sneakers (true to size) because I needed something more than a beach cover-up as I was heading from the beach to run errands. Espadrille sneakers are so trendy right now and this pair (under $75) will be great when we are exploring Newport next month.
If you’re curious what I’m eating I made these super easy blender muffins and brought organic fruit and coffee for us to munch on as well.
I’m thankful for trends like high waisted bikinis and athleisure that cater to mom life. After carrying two large babies to term my belly skin is stretched out. It never shrank back down to what it was prior to having kids. I don’t think about it until I am in a bikini and it rolls and wrinkles like the skin of a Shar Pei dog when I am anything but perfectly vertical. My boobs aren’t much different. Push-up bras are futile when there’s nothing left to push up :). So this high waisted bikini with the halter top offers what I feel is age appropriate coverage for my mom bod.
And speaking of coverage, please excuse all the butt shots but I am not a fan of the cheeky bathing suits that are in style right now so I wanted to be clear this high waisted bikini bottom offers more “full coverage” than a lot of similar styles.
One piece advice I would give if you’re really dreading getting in a swimsuit is to get a spray tan the day before. A spray tan covers a lot of flaws (I had a fresh one on for this post) and really helps me feel more confident in my own (tan) skin.
I’d love to hear from you what kind of suit you’re wearing this Summer! Is there a particular style you find is most flattering for your body?
Thank you to ModCloth for sponsoring this post.
