I love a good neutral capsule wardrobe. The idea is to group versatile, basic wardrobe pieces that can be restyled in many outfit combinations. The goal is to have a wardrobe of items that are flexible and can be worn a variety of different ways for a single season. Some of these pieces are things I wear throughout the year, so I want them to hold up well to wash and wear.
I focus on neutral colors in different styles and necklines. A turtleneck sweater is great staple in a wardrobe. I like this one for a more form-fitting fit and this one for a more comfy, loose fit. I also like the deeper side slit detail.
For bottoms, I’m sticking with the basics with a pair of blue, white (I love a winter white outfit!) and black wash jeans. And of course, a pair of black fleece-lined leggings.
It can be easy to overdo it in the outerwear department and then have an overflowing closet (I know first hand), so I’m focusing on just the staples. One brown coat and one black coat is all you need to complete a winter outfit. I also included this coatigan that looks just like the J. Crew one, but I personally like the Amazon version better.
In the accessory department, you need at least one good beanie and a nice, thick scarf. Often in the winter, I gravitate towards slightly larger leather tote since I can carry a little more in them (great for throwing in your mittens, hats, etc.). This one comes in lots of different colors.
The beautiful thing about the capsule wardrobe is how easily everything interchanges. You can mix and match almost all the tops with the bottoms and shoes and vice versa to get endless outfit ideas and combinations. If you’re looking for inspiration for other seasons, you can view my past capsule wardrobes.
Thanks so much for stopping by! I’d love to hear from you. What’s your one must-have item for winter?
