Interior Design Trends for Family Homes in 2025

1. Nature-Inspired Interiors: Let the Outdoors in, in a BOLD Way.

Biophilic design, which emphasizes a connection to nature, has been growing in popularity for years, but in 2025, it will take center stage with even bolder and more creative implementations. Expect to see more statement indoor trees, indoor gardens, and the incorporation of natural materials like stone, wood, and bamboo throughout the home. Indoor spaces that seamlessly blend into outdoor living will be top of mind for architects in warm weather climates.

What to expect:

  • Larger indoor plants: Think towering trees like this one or lush ferns that fill empty corners with life.
  • Sculptural natural elements: Exposed wood beams, stone accents, and furniture that highlights the beauty of organic textures.
  • Earthy tones: A return to calming hues of terracotta, clay, olive green, and warm neutrals that evoke the outdoors. I am REALLY into the warmer whites heading into 2025.

How to incorporate it:

  • Add a statement plant to your living room or bedroom. I have ordered from this website and REALLY find it easy to keep my tree alive and growing. I put their self watering planter into a cuter pot of my own.
  • Opt for natural wood finishes on furniture and/or flooring.
  • Look for decor that features natural stone or marble accents to create a tactile, grounded feel. Here are a few options:

2. Smart Homes Get Smarter: Tech-Infused Interiors

As technology continues to evolve, smart home integration will become even more seamless and sophisticated in 2025. Expect gadgets and appliances to blend seamlessly into your interior design, offering both convenience and aesthetic appeal. Voice-activated systems, smart lighting, window treatments that rise and fall on command, and temperature controls will become as natural as adding a new piece of furniture. Personally, I am not using this trend as much as most because we often shut off the WiFi in our home to give our bodies a break from so much EMF radiation.

What to expect:

  • Invisible tech: Devices will be more discreet, hidden within walls, furniture, or fixtures.
  • Window treatments that adjust with the sun: from dusk to dawn… smart tech will allow your shades to adjust on a schedule you, or the sun, sets, whichever you choose! The window treatments I always use have smart home options.
  • Integrated charging stations: Built-in chargers and wireless charging pads will replace unsightly cables. THIS I REALLY LOVE!

How to incorporate it:

  • Upgrade your home with voice-activated speakers or smart light systems that you can control from your phone.
  • Look for sleek furniture pieces with built-in charging capabilities to keep your space tidy and tech-friendly. We have these nightstands that have built-in charging outlets.
  • Explore smart thermostats or climate control systems, like the Nest Learning Thermostat from Google, that offer both functionality and elegance.

3. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Materials

Sustainability continues to dominate interior design, and 2025 will see an even greater emphasis on eco-friendly choices. Many of us are moving away from fast furniture and opting for sustainable, ethically sourced materials. Pottery Barn has an entire Sustainability Shop! Expect to see an uptick in:

  • Recycled and Upcycled Materials: From furniture crafted from reclaimed wood to fabric made from recycled plastic bottles, designers are creating beautiful pieces that help reduce waste.
  • Natural Materials: Materials like cork, bamboo, and rattan will be everywhere, providing not only an eco-conscious solution but also adding warmth and texture to any room.

I love natural material rugs because I think air quality in our very tightly built homes is a big issue to pay attention to. Synthetic rugs can contribute to unhealthy air quality because they can contain VOC’s, microplastics, and flame retardants.

The push for sustainability also means that people will be investing more in long-lasting, high-quality furniture that can stand the test of time.

Pro Tip: I’m guessing many of you already have started incorporating this trend, but if you’re looking to start, consider adding accents like woven baskets, solid wooden coffee tables, or vintage items with a history.

4. Minimalist Interiors offer Maximum Style in 2025

Minimalism is all about creating a peaceful, organized, and purposeful space that supports your lifestyle. By focusing on simplicity, functionality, and high-quality design, minimalist interiors can feel both modern and timeless, with an emphasis on creating a space that feels calming and serene.

This feels very aligned with the direction I’d like to continue taking my homes. If you are looking to do similar some tips:

Start with a Neutral Palette:

  • Choose light neutrals for walls and large furniture pieces, and accent with darker tones in your choice of accessories or small furniture items. A monochromatic palette can help unify the space. Warmer whites are overtaking stark whites heading into 2025. Stay tuned for paint colors in the home we are moving into in April.

Declutter:

  • Purge items that don’t add value or function to the space. Donate or store things you no longer need to keep your space free from excess. Think of minimalist living as creating space, not just for physical items, but for peace of mind. Take a “less is more’ motto on decor!

Invest in Quality Over Quantity:

  • When purchasing new furniture or decor, choose pieces that are durable and timeless. High-quality, well-made items will not only last longer but will also elevate the overall feel of your home. We are selling out home furnished and I purchased these York Slope Arm Sofas in Oatmeal Performance Linen for our new home. See more of the furniture I have purchased for the home here.

Simplify Furniture:

  • Opt for furniture with simple lines and a functional design. Avoid overly ornate or bulky pieces. For example, choose a sofa with clean, straight lines or a sleek metal bed frame.

This is our Dune Sectional in the performance fabric “Oyster”. Not only do I love the modern coastal look of this slip cover but being able to remove the slip cover to clean it is a bonus when it comes to durability. I have a more thorough review over here.

Add Texture, Not Clutter:

  • While minimalist design focuses on simplicity, you can still add warmth and interest to the space through textures. Use natural materials like wool, cotton, and linen in your textiles, or incorporate wood, stone, or metal in your furniture or finishes.

Maximize Natural Light:

  • Let in as much natural light as possible by using sheer curtains or blinds, and positioning furniture to avoid blocking windows. Natural light makes spaces feel airy, fresh, and open, which is a key characteristic of minimalist design.

5. Creative Use of Space/Flex Spaces

With the rise in work from home careers we are seeing guest bedrooms that flex as office space, and lofts or landings and even large closets turned into office space. The same goes for playrooms. Those with young children, who often work from home too, are trying to maximize their space so everyone’s needs are met.

Minimalist home office with a light wood desk and a trundle bed sofa, showcasing a stylish and functional flex space design for 2025.

Look for multi-use pieces like this trundle sleeper sofa we have used (in color TAFT CEMENT) as a guest bed in our office for the last few years. If you’re planning new construction I think more bedrooms is a good idea since more and more families are looking for home office space.
