As we move into 2023, we are seeing some shifts in interior design trends that some of you might be interested in considering for your home. I feel the modern farmhouse is trending out in favor of a more cozy, organic feel in the home. Here are the top 7 modern interior design trends I am loving that you can expect to see in the coming year:
Textured walls are becoming increasingly popular in 2023. Texture can be achieved with different techniques like plastering, stucco, wood paneling, or wallpaper. All of these methods add depth and dimension to a space and can be used to create a focal point.
In the last couple years light and natural wood have been popular but I’m seeing more wood tones, including dark tones, popping up in kitchens and offices in particular. If you like a dark wood, espresso and cherry are making a bit of a comeback! I am a huge fan of using wood tones in your home but I am planning to stick to white oak/natural tones in our kitchen. We are doing a natural wood tone island with painted peripheral cabinets and I am SO EXCITED about it.
Natural materials such as wood, stone, and linen are becoming increasingly popular in interior design. This is not new, but INCREASING in popularity. It’s part of the “sustainable” style approach to design. Natural materials add warmth and texture to a space, and can help to create a sense of connection to the natural world.
Earthy tones, such as terracotta, olive green and warm beige, are becoming more popular in interior design. I have seen a lot of fabulous kitchens lately that will be giving a lot of folks inspo for their 2023 renovations. I am doing a putty colored paint on our peripheral kitchen cabinets. Our last home had “Edgecomb Gray” cabinets and I loved the subtle contrast against the white walls.
A simple subway tile kitchen backsplash is going by the wayside for designers who want to be “of the moment” in their designs. Continuing a counter slab up the wall has been gaining popularity as well as tile that looks hand-cut. Again, this creates a “textured” look, embracing the imperfect look. Textured tile is also popular in bathrooms (both behind vanities and throughout showers) for 2023.
I touched on natural materials and backslashes when it comes to stone but I think it’s really having more of a moment than those highlighted. When it comes to stone I still I am noting more dramatic veining, warmer tones, and thick/mitered edges as things I would love to do in my own home. I am personally losing interest in the stone waterfall countertops but I don’t think they have lost luster in the masses!
With people spending more time at home than ever before, cozy and comfortable spaces are becoming more important in interior design. This trend includes using plush fabrics, warm lighting, and soft textures to create a sense of warmth and comfort in a space. I see this as a prominent trend in fashion as well so I don’t think it’s going anywhere any time soon. The world seems to be trending more casual.
These are my favorite 7 modern interior design trends that you can expect to see in 2023. From natural materials to sustainable design, these trends reflect a desire for spaces that are not only beautiful but also functional and comfortable. As always, it’s important to remember that design trends should be used as inspiration, not rules. Feel free to mix and match these trends to create a space that reflects your personal style.
