Let me start by saying I have no professional training in interior design or styling. These are just tips I have used in styling my own mantles throughout the years. I want to keep these styling tips brief and basic because decorating should be fun and creative – not stressful.
A large mirror or a large piece of leaning art is a great place to start. When I mentioned consider your proportions above, this will really set the tone for the space. You want something large that will draw the eye up. Don’t leave too much negative space that will dwarf your decor.
I am a big fan of neutrals but whatever the color scheme of your house (or holiday season) is – I suggested limiting the decor pieces to 2-3 color families. In my home I always use a base of neutral decor and then add in one pop of seasonal color (for instance blue in spring and summer, rust in the fall, and frosted greens in the winter).
Three things to remember here: VARIATION, BALANCE, and ODD NUMBERS. Vary the height of your mantle decor pieces. I put the largest items further back. Don’t put all tall objects on one side of the mantle and small pieces on the opposite side – that will throw off your balance. If you are going to group items, I most often use odd numbers of items such as 3 candlesticks grouped together.
If you collect great basic styling pieces along the way you should be able to style your mantle with pieces you collect from around your home. These are things you already love with a great price tag :).
